Believing Luke dead, Jacen returned to his ship and tortured Ben Skywalker in the Embrace of Pain, the Yuuzhan Vong device Vergere had used which had partly caused Jacen to turn to the dark side. Luke was in fact not dead and he infiltrated the ship, catching Jacen trying to turn Ben to the dark side. Shocked by what a cruel and dangerous man his nephew had become and not waiting for Caedus to notice, Luke attacked his own nephew to save Ben. The lightsaber fight was brutal and both Caedus and Luke were badly damaged. Caedus was no match for Luke, yet gained the upper hand with Luke distracted by Ben. But as Caedus strangled Luke with a Yuuzhan Vong vine he was stabbed in the back by Ben, who had escaped from the Embrace to kill Jacen. Horrified by his son's dark side actions and Jacen's wanton brutality, Luke took Ben and escaped the Anakin Solo sparing Caedus his life.
